Stand Up for Your KidsHow would you react if your child came home with this report: "My teacher said I couldn't write about God," Erica Shead's 10-year old daughter, Erin, told her.
Sadly, an educator told Erin God was an unacceptable choice. She was even forced to take her illustration off school property, because it "might violate the First Amendment." What kind of message does that send a young child? That Christianity is something shameful, that "God" is tantamount to saying a dirty word in public? It would have been easy for Erin's mom to stay silent. But she spoke up, taking her concerns to the principal and ultimately to local media. She challenged school officials to show her "a policy where this child cannot talk about God on paper." Thanks to Erica Shead's willingness to speak up, the censorship was reversed and young Erin received an "A" on her assignment. The good news is you, too, can stand up for your children like this mom did—not only on religious freedom issues, but also on other topics you're concerned about, such as sexually explicit reading assignments. Focus on the Family wants your family's values to thrive—in any and every circumstance. That's why we've developed helpful resources, designed to educate and equip you to successfully navigate today's difficult culture-related issues. In fact, our "Parents' Bill of Rights" explains which rights should be recognized in public schools, including the ability to examine lesson plans and access an environment that respects your family's religious freedoms. If you are a parent—or know others who would benefit—you'll definitely want to access this information. Thank you for protecting parental rights and religious freedoms!
