From the front gate of their 20-acre Orcas Island farm, Errol and Kathleen Speed can glimpse a small stand of evergreen trees, an open meadow, and their organic garden.
What they can't see is why local government, San Juan County, has chosen to treat them like criminals for minor building code violations.
For minor and harmless code violations, the Speeds were charged with and convicted of a criminal offense. They were forced to pay thousands of dollars in attorney's fees and sentenced to jail time.
Most people are numb to excessive regulations--so much so that many of us run afoul of some government regulations and laws every day. Stories like this remind us to consider: Are we really free when government is so entangled with every aspect of our lives? What happens when minor code violations can be considered crimes simply on the whim of a local prosecutor and un-elected bureaucrats?
It doesn't have to be that way. The first step to bringing government back under control is to recognize just how much of a threat to our freedom it has become. And to spread the word. Will you help us get this message out by sharing this video with your email contacts or social media friends?
Thank you for your help.
