Can’t We All Just Get Along?

Now, before the protests start pouring in, let me state the obvious:
Yes, I know we are the United States Concealed Carry Association. And yes, I know that an “open carry” special edition for the Concealed Carry Report seems slightly counterintuitive.
But here’s the thing:
“We gun owners have a problem. Michael Bloomberg has split our ranks
with the topic of open carry. He and the mainstream media are fully in
control of the issue and they are using it to pit gun owners against
each other.”
So says Nik Clark, President and Chairman of Wisconsin Carry, in an editorial he sent me recently.
Now, Clark is a friend of mine, and his message really resonated with me…
It helps to show that the “fight” for gun rights goes well beyond the scope of what we do here.
In fact, I feel his message is so important that I’ve dedicated this entire Concealed Carry Report to the issue of open carry. Call it the Open Carry Report for this week, if you prefer. :)
Here’s the deal:
You may recall that I wrote a piece on open carry a few months back
after the media fiasco involving Open Carry Texas. Here’s a snippet of
that article:
I wish it was commonplace for people like you and me to stop by our local coffee shops carrying AR-15s over our shoulders.
I wish that we could decide
what's right for us and our families without worrying about following
the rules laid down by a too-powerful government.
I wish people wouldn't fear guns, and I wish people wouldn't alienate the good guys who carry them.
I stand by these statements, but I think I missed a critical
perspective—one that examines the effects of responsible gun owners—both
open and concealed carriers—turning on each other in a “win” for the
other side.
And so, my goal this week is to provide you with a multitude of different perspectives on open carry.
Kevin Michalowski kicks things off with his take on “tactical
advantage.” He implores all people who carry guns—whether openly or
concealed—to remember they’re under intense scrutiny. Bad behavior is
not allowed.
Beth Alcazar presents a similar viewpoint. She notes that carrying a gun
comes with the opportunity (and responsibility) to showcase just how
respectful we can be.
As usual, Rick Sapp addresses the big, burning question in readers’ minds: “Does open carry make you a target?”
Scott W. Wagner provides us with a great review of the SIG P229, a
midsize gun he suggests could be used for both open or concealed carry,
and John Caile suggests that anyone who carries a gun for
self-defense, openly or concealed, is an ambassador for the carry
movement. He implores each of us to “be a good one.”
Nik Clark really brings it all together with a larger message, one that I
haven’t been able to express nearly as powerfully as he does:
“The crux of the issue is this: we need to honor and embrace all safe, legal carry and stop fighting amongst ourselves.”
I urge you to take the time to read Nik's message in its entirety, to join the conversation, and—most importantly—to continue to be the respectful and responsible gun owner our country needs!
Take Care and Stay Safe,
Tim Schmidt

Open Carry: Use the Chance To Show Off
BY: KEVIN MICHALOWSKI |

Over
the past couple weeks I read an interesting op-ed piece (I actually
edited it for this report) showing how the gun control weenies are
sending gun owners to attack each other over this open carry debate.
I think it was Ben Franklin…

Open Carry and Responsible Gun Ownership
BY: BETH ALCAZAR |
|
I
don’t have any issues with open carry. I live in Alabama, and I have
spotted a handgun on someone’s hip on many occasions. It’s really not
that unusual of a sight around here. However, I do have issues with
irresponsibility. And some gun owners are acting very irresponsibly.…

On Being a Target
BY: RICK SAPP |

I don’t particularly like the idea of open carry, Constitutional carry—call it what you will.
There, I’ve said it, although cautiously, using one of those squeegee words, “particularly.”…

The 9mm SIG Sauer P229: Midsize Excellence for Concealed or Open Carry
BY: SCOTT W. WAGNER |

I
really hadn’t had much shooting experience with SIG Sauer handguns in
the past. While I knew that SIG has always made an excellent series of
pistols, my attention had always been diverted elsewhere—until now.
The newest version…

To Open Carry or Not? That is the Question
BY: JOHN CAILE |
|
Before
you start banging away at your keyboards, supporting or opposing open
carry, let me say at the outset that I have a relatively neutral view on
the subject. My goal is simply to suggest that before deciding,
consider what’s best, both for you personally and for the rest of us who
carry…

Oops! I Forgot About the "Moms" Gang
BY: MARK WALTERS |

So
I just went to Starbucks. Two young women (who I always see there in
the mornings) smiled and waved at me: “Good morning, welcome to
Starbucks!”
“Thank you, good morning,” I replied. I approached the counter…
