Dear Larry,
The battle against union excesses that never takes a holiday will be
featured tonight on two different Seattle television newscasts.
Crews from both KING-5 and KIRO-TV visited the Freedom Foundation's
offices in Olympia on Labor Day to film a report about the
organization's decision to spend the day working rather than honoring
organized labor.
Staff members took a day off the previous Friday, Aug. 29, and dubbed it "Right-to-Work Day."
"Labor Day is supposed to be about American workers, not just labor
unions," said Labor Policy Analyst Maxford Nelsen. "While private-sector
unions served their purpose, the 21st Century labor movement is
dominated by government unions that coercively extract dues from workers
and use it to promote a narrow ideological agenda. In an era marked by
choice and information, workers should be free to choose for themselves
whether to associate with a labor union.
"It makes little sense for us to actively oppose the union every
other day of the year, then take a day off in September on their
behalf," he added. "We'd much rather celebrate the right to work
regardless of union affiliation. We think that's more in keeping with
the original intent of Labor Day, and we're proud to take this stand."
Be sure to watch the broadcasts. KING-5 News is shown at 5 and 11
p.m. PST; KIRO-TV broadcasts its news at 5, 5:30, 6 and 11 p.m.
