The debate over redefining
marriage is a question about whether there is any difference between a
relationship involving a man and a woman and one with people of the same
gender.
Proponents of real marriage
have long argued that one key difference is the ability or inability to
provide a child both a mother and father. In response, proponents of
same-sex marriage have argued that children don't need a mother and
father.
A study released on Sunday, a by
Professor Mark Regnerus from the University of Texas, found that there
was actually a dramatic difference for children raised in a married
mother/father household and children raised by two parents of the same
gender. The key differences are summarized here:
As a result of the study Prof. Regnerus stated that, "The empirical claim that no notable differences exist most go."
The study used a "gold
standard" data set of nearly 3,000 randomly selected American young
adults and looked at their lives on 40 measures of social, emotional,
and relational outcomes.
According to the Washington Times story on the study, "when
compared with adults raised in married, mother-father families, adults
raised by lesbian mothers had negative outcomes in 24 of 40 categories,
while adults raised by gay fathers had negative outcomes in 19
categories."
