You’ll hear from a carefully chosen slate of speakers pulled from the
worlds of technology and politics. Some of the confirmed speakers and
topics include:
“Dueling gun initiatives: technology and initiatives,” with Phil
Watson, Director of Special Projects, Second Amendment Foundation
- Phil Watson is the director of special projects at the Second
Amendment Foundation, a reporter and editor for TheGunMag, and executive
director for the International Association for the Protection of
Civilian Arms Rights. Recently Phil helped unite 29 gun rights groups
from 21 different countries to oppose and lobby against the UN Arms
Trade Treaty. His project "Meet the Mayors" gained national recognition
in highlighting the hypocrisy of Michael Bloomberg's Mayor's Against
Illegal Guns. His public records requests on the Seattle gun buyback
were recognized and given Key Award by the Washington Coalition for Open
Government. The records request helped uncover the much written about
Gun Control Playbook and resulted in a $38,000 settlement and apology
from the city of Seattle for not disclosing public records. Phil also
appears frequently in media interviews and public gatherings in support
of Second Amendment rights. His online debate against state Senator Adam
Kline was the second most viewed debate in the history of the Seattle
Times chat sessions.
"National developments," with Mike Shields, Chief of Staff at the RNC
- Mike Shields is Chief of Staff at Republican National Committee.
Mr. Shields has a wealth of political experience and worked on the Hill
and in the field, for national committees and at the state level. Mr.
Shields served at National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) as
Political Director, as Communications Director for the US House Speaker,
and Chief Political Spokesman to the Speaker. He served briefly in the
Bush administration at the US Labor Department and served as Campaign
Manager and Operative in Alabama and Pennsylvania. He served as Research
Director of the NRCC, Director of Special Projects, and Director of the
committee's Independent Expenditure unit at NRCC.
“Messaging in a digital world,” with Matthew Dybwad of CRAFT
- Matthew heads up the digital practice at CRAFT, leading a team of
designers, developers, and communicators specializing in digital
presence, email marketing, advocacy, fundraising, SEO, UX, and other fun
acronyms. Matthew has designed and built websites for countless
political candidates, including Mia Love, Senator Mitch McConnell,
Senator Pat Toomey, and Speaker John Boehner, as well as organizations
including The Heritage Foundation, Americans for Prosperity, Club for
Growth, the Pickens Plan, the Republican National Committee, the
National Republican Congressional Committee, the Republican State
Leadership Committee, and the Martin Luther King, Jr., National Memorial
Foundation.
“How can data empower individual citizens?” With Safouen Rabah, Vice President of Product at Socrata
- Socrata was found in 2007 on the idea that “public data made
available in the cloud – and thus accessible to anyone with a web
connection – would serve researchers, public policy experts,
entrepreneurs, and busy citizens to better understand their government
services”.
“What does a modern campaign look like?” With Chad Magendanz, State Representative 5th Legislative District
- Chad serves as the ranking member on the House Education Committee
as well as being assigned to the Higher Education, Technology and
Economic Development, and Rules committees. In June he was elected by
his caucus peers to serve as Assistant Floor Leader, and is currently
the only freshman legislator in caucus leadership.
“Technology for Candidates,” with Mike Stall, Principal Architect at Microsoft
- Mike is a Principal Software Architect at Microsoft. He has spoken
frequently about technology and politics, co-organized several
technology conferences, and taught technology for candidates at the
Jennifer Dunn Leadership Institute. He has volunteered on a fair number
of campaigns and has built a variety of tools.
“Informing voters with technology” with Scott Roberts, Citizen Action Director at the Freedom Foundation
- Scott Roberts, the Citizen Action Network Director at the Freedom
Foundation, is experienced at organizing grassroots activist and
building effective coalitions. Formerly the Property Rights Director at
the Freedom Foundation, he built Stop Taking Our Property (S.T.O.P.)
Thurston County to find common sense solutions to managing the Mazama
Pocket Gopher and relieving private property owners from harmful
regulations. Looking forward, Scott is using his experience to equip
citizens who are motivated to take action and make substantial change in
their own communities.
And many more!
We hope to see you there, so register today while space lasts for Tech Roanoke on June 7th!
Sincerely,
The Protect Our Gun Rights Team
