Senator Pam Roach explains her brief in I-1366 case.

Pam Roach explains why she filed amicus brief in Initiative 1366 case

Opponents are suing Secretary of State Kim Wyman for refusing to take Initiative 1366 off the ballot and suing personally Jack, Mike, and me for sponsoring it.

Secretary Wyman's reply brief, filed on Tuesday, makes opponents look foolish (as does our reply brief).

But also on Tuesday, there was a surprise filing by state senator Pam Roach -- she submitted an amicus brief on behalf of the 339,236 voters who signed Initiative 1366 petitions.

        As she said,
"I felt it was important that the 339,000 voters who signed I-1366 petitions were represented in this case.  Their voices deserve to be heard in that courtroom too.  As a signer myself, I thought I could help those 339,000 citizens speak directly to the judge.  As I wrote in my amicus:  'The Plaintiffs’ are claiming that they will be irreparably harmed if the people are allowed to vote on Initiative 1366.  Not so.  No one is harmed by a public vote on an initiative.  It is the voters who will be irreparably harmed if Initiative 1366 is removed from the ballot and blocked from a vote because it will prevent the voters from expressing their views on the measure.  It is the 339,236 voters who signed petitions who will be irreparably harmed if Initiative 1366 is blocked because they signed those petitions to ensure a vote. ... I urge that the court not take the unprecedented and undemocratic step of preventing the people from voting on a qualified statewide initiative.'"

         Isn't she fantastic?
