NSA's domestic spy program

Larry:
Tomorrow I will force the expiration of the NSA's illegal spying program.

I will not allow any bill extending illegal NSA spying to be rushed through

ahead of the deadline.
My oath is to support and defend the Constitution, and I won't back down.

The abuse of general warrants and the attack on the Bill of Rights must

stop once-and-for-all.
We don't have to choose between fighting terrorism and obeying the

Constitution.
That's why, two years ago, I sued the NSA.

It's why I proposed the Fourth Amendment Protection Act to force our

government to abide by the Bill of Rights.
It's why I have fought for a full, open and honest debate on warrantless

domestic spying -- a debate that is always kicked down the road in the
name of "security."
So last week, with the proponents of this illegal spying rushing toward

a deadline to ram through renewing illegal spying, I took a stand.
I filibustered for over 10 hours to shine a light on the vast expansion

of the spy state and the erosion of our liberties.
I stood on the Senate floor until the early hours of the morning and

helped block any short-term extension of these powers.
Tomorrow, the Senate will come back from recess with just hours left

before the NSA's illegal spying powers expire.
And I won't allow defenders of the spy state to legislate through a

manufactured crisis by holding a deadline over the head of Congress.
Let me be clear: I believe the number one job of the federal

government is national defense.
I believe we must fight terrorism, and I believe we must stand

strong against our enemies.
But we do not need to compromise the Constitution in the process.

In fact, we must not.

I am ready and willing to start the debate on how we fight terrorism

without giving up our liberty.
This can't be delayed any longer.

I do not do this to obstruct.

I'm fighting for a strong national defense that upholds the

Constitution and protects Americans from enemies who seek
to do us harm.
So I hope I can count on you to sign your petition and stand with me as I force illegal NSA spying to expire and stand strong against any deals or threats.
In Liberty,

Rand Paul

Tornado Warning | Stoplight

by CitizenLink Team

Imagine you're driving down a highway with a threatening storm cloud dead ahead. You see a couple storm-chaser vans stopped on the side of the road with the doors open. And the college students from those vans are standing at a fence all looking in the direction you're headed.

What would you do?

In his Stoplight® commentary, Stuart Shepard shares what his family did. And he explains how this real-life story applies to our nation.

Quoteworthy
“I have one great political idea… The best expression of it, I have found in the Bible. It is in substance, ‘Righteousness exalteth a nation; sin is a reproach to any people.’(Proverbs 14:34) This constitutes my politics the negative and the positive of my politics, and the whole of my politics. I feel it my duty to do all in my power to infuse this idea into this idea into the public mind, that it may speedily be recognized and practiced upon by our people.”

'I Would Speak Up—If I Knew What to Say'

It's probably happened to most of us at one point in time. The opportunity to speak to an issue we care about is before us, yet we fail to take advantage of the moment, because we're not sure what to say. The opening for meaningful conversation is at hand, such as with these recent headlines:
  • Bruce Jenner says he's a woman. How should Christians respond?
  • The U.S. Supreme Court is considering the redefinition of marriage. Why does it matter if a same-sex couple gets married?
  • Terminally ill patients want physician-assisted suicide. Why not let them die by a doctor's hand?
And, yet we stop cold, because we feel unprepared.
With the demands and fast pace of life, few people have time to research current social issues or to develop strategic talking points that address the secular worldview arguments that often undergird a counter view.
That's where Focus on the Family's Thriving Values team comes in.
Our staff of issue experts have dedicated decades to researching the hot social topics of the day. From giving interviews to major media outlets to crafting relevant talking points, this group of experts knows what to say.
And, the resources they develop help people like you every day:
"I am extremely grateful for Focus on the Family and the public policy materials you produce—not only for my own use but for the countless times I've shared information with others."—George, Texas
"I want to thank everyone at Focus on the Family for speaking out about key cultural and policy issues that affect us….Thank you for your continued encouragement, and for spotlighting the trends that impact present and future generations."—Renee, Florida
How can we help to equip you?
If reading is your preferred learning style, our Social Issues web page houses easy-to-consume resources on many topics.
However, if you'd rather watch a video, our Thriving Values™ YouTube® channel features more than 65 topical videos, most less than three minutes long.
Either way, an investment of 5-10 minutes a week will equip you to speak with accuracy, confidence and love the next time opportunity knocks.
Get equipped. Get engaged. Redeem the culture—one video at a time.

TRUE THE VOTE THIS WEEK...

Check Out TTV’s Dueling Op-Ed on Universal Registration in Illinois

This week True the Vote was invited to submit an op-ed as part of a debate over an Illinois proposal to bring about universal voter registration, similar to the law signed in Oregon earlier this year. Although the Chicago Sun-Times’ editorial board argues that the law should be passed in hopes that voter turnout will improve, TTV Founder Catherine Engelbrecht urges a look at the bigger picture: “While the ‘opt-out voter registration’ bill SB2134 is advertised as a cure-all for presumed voter apathy, it also manages to open a door toward greater mandates that may never be shut. Free speech rights are anything but when lawmakers begin to make assumptions, especially for the cause of social engineering.”

We Will Not Be Silenced: A Simple Fix for the IRS

An excellent opinion submission to The Wall Street Journal this week details a painfully simple proposal to prevent future abuses on the part of the Internal Revenue Service. While congressional investigators continue to haggle over once “lost” emails from key officials, Scott Blackburn from the Center for Competitive Politics writes, “The job of the IRS should be to collect taxes, fairly and efficiently. Since the income tax was enacted in 1913, however, the IRS has appropriated to itself—sometimes on its own, sometimes with congressional blessing—the right to make political judgments about groups of citizens. That is the central failure revealed by this scandal … The treatment of tea party groups is not the first time that the IRS has been used as a political cudgel to beat some organizations into silent submission. But this has been one of the most systematic efforts to do so. If we want to ensure that such abuse does not happen again, we must, and rather easily can, take the agency out of the speech-police business.”

a battle won but the war continues

NumbersUSA
26 states win early court battle but another Amnesty rolls on.
Only NumbersUSA funds ICE lawsuit.
Larry,
A federal appeals court this week upheld an injunction that bars President Obama from granting amnesties and working papers to millions of illegal aliens under his 2014 executive amnesty. This is a huge victory, but it represents only a single battle: it's only a "temporary stay" until the court can hear the final case, and the injunction does not apply to his earlier amnesty for young people.
That's right: Obama is continuing to amnesty hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens under his earlier, 2012 executive amnesty.
And the legal battle to stop him is being funded by only one organization: yours!
Our goal is to raise $50,000 this weekend.
Support Lawsuit Against Amnesty
Don't let Obama get away with it! Help stop him by supporting the ICE agents' lawsuit. They're suing because they will have to choose between violating federal law if they comply with the Obama administration's unlawful directive, or risk "adverse employment action."
The judge hearing the case has already stated that the plaintiffs were "likely to succeed on the merits of their claim that the Department of Homeland Security has implemented a program contrary to congressional mandate." But their case was initially tossed on a technicality... starting a lengthy appeals process.
The agents are not done yet; their fight continues in the courts. But they don't have the financial support of the 26 states suing Obama over his 2014 amnesty. They need you.
NumbersUSA is the only organization financially supporting the ICE agents' lawsuit. Without your financial help, there will be no one to challenge these illegitimate actions of President Obama.
We have to continue to oppose Obama's amnesties on every front, including inside Congress. For instance, our lawsuit would be moot the moment Congress endorses Obama's amnesties.
These costs are far beyond our normal citizens' advocacy costs. We've raised significant money for the ICE agents case since 2012. But now our fund is dropping very low even as our appeal gets to a critical phase.
We need your financial support, now. We need to raise another $50,000 right away!
